If you still remember them it's because they contain a universal truth that your readers will recognize from their own life. Look for small self-contained incidents that are still vivid in your memory. Don't rummage around in your past - or your family's past - to find episodes that you think are "important" enough to be worthy of including in your memoir. My final reducing advice can be summed up in two words: think small. This means leaving out of your memoir many people who don't need to be there. You must find a narrative trajectory for the story you want to tell and never relinquish control. Remember that you are the protagonist in your own memoir, the tour guide. Return to the other one later and make it a separate project. Decide to write about your mother's side of the family or your father's side, but not both. Families are complex organisms, especially if you trace them back several generations. For example: in a family history, one big decision would be to write about only one branch of the family. You must make a series of reducing decisions. Because of that anxiety, many memoirs linger for years half written, or never get written at all. What to put in? What to leave out? Where to start? Where to stop? How to shape the story? The past looms over them in a thousand fragments, defying them to impose on it some kind of order. Most people embarking on a memoir are paralyzed by the size of the task.

The eyeglass frames highlighted in this book are only a very small sampling of the entire universe of designs available today to the eyeglass wearer. Elton John is an excellent example of this belief. Eyeglass frames and lens colors are considered by many to be fashion statements of the utmost importance. Not only do modern eyeglasses improve the wearer’s vision, they also protect the wearer’s eyes from sun damage. Although the basic eyeglass design has changed little since Benjamin Franklin’s time, the materials and processes used to fashion today’s eyeglasses have improved dramatically. It is commonly accepted that the American printer, inventor, statesman, and man-about-town Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia invented bifocals-a life-saver for older eyeglass wearers-and several paintings of him portray him wearing glasses. The first true eyeglasses were made in Italy in about 1286 and have been constantly refined and improved since then. Often, however, the eye does not work as it should. The eye is the primary means-though not the only means because humans also hear, smell, taste, feel, and perhaps sense a hidden sixth dimension-with which we interpret our surroundings. The first, titled “Lovesickness”, is a collection within a collection, compiling all five chapters of Ito’s “Lovesick Dead” serialized manga in one package for easy reading. Those who love (or prefer) Ito’s shorter works over his longer ones will find a little of both here as the content is divided into three sections, two of which index related stories while the final three are totally unconnected from each other – and among the best. Up next is a collection (of sorts) compiling ten “stories” in a single volume, hence the name Lovesickness: Junji Ito Story Collection (translation by Jocelyne Allen). From appearing in blockbusters games like Death Stranding to new anime adaptations of his older work, more non-Japanese readers are getting to experience one of the most interesting voices in the horror genre than ever. Viz has been on a roll lately – a Junji Ito role – with its fantastic reissuing of some of the horror manga master’s lesser-known work to English-reading audiences, including last year’s translation of the planet-licking Remina. It is a vibrant portrait of the Nicaraguan people and their volcanic land, a cultural history rich in poetry and bloodshed, baseball and insurrection.
